Family sessions: what you need to know!
Winter has been full of cute family mini sessions while events are a bit quieter, and I am LOVING it! The affordable 30 minute 3:30pm mini sessions have been perfect for young families with new babies or toddler/kinder/prep-aged kids!
If you’re on the fence, here’s some common info I share when responding to enquiries, to help you prep for your session!
How long a session do we need?
My 30 minute mini sessions have been great for 1-2 parents with 1-2 young kids. Depending on your childrens temperament, sometimes I’ve used 5-10 minutes of that time to chat to the kids and get them more adjusted to me and the cameras, other times we can jump right in! I offer 45, 60 and 90 minute sessions if you feel you need longer!
For larger families (say 3 generations, or 6+ people) I do recommend a 45 or 60 minute session, to get extra combos and locations, for more value for you all!
What should we wear/not wear?
If you’re having a larger family group, I do recommend a similar colour vibe - even just ‘neutrals’ - think whites, creams, tans, browns, olive, sage, denim, any mix of these is great! Helps keep it conhesive, but matching outfits isn’t necessary! Whatever you are comfortable in.
What I DON’T recommend, is anything too bright, neon, fluro. Anything patterned or printed or loud graphic tees can be distracting in photos - of course, if this is your style, go for it! Happy to chat outfit ideas before the day.
What should we bring?
Depends on the dynamic of your group. Young kids do often require some items! Your kids favourite toy (teddies or trucks) can often calm them down if they’re anxious or overly energetic.
For babies: their favourite blanky to sit/lie them on (and a second towel/rug if blanky can’t be on potentially dirty ground or wet grass), a rattle or keys to get their attention, dummies and bottle to keep them happy, wipes to clear up snot or drool.
I’ve also found having The Wiggles, Bluey or their favourite show loaded up on YouTube on phone helps too to calm them down.
How long until we receive the family session photos?
My usual editing timeframe is 1-2 weeks but I’ll let you know when you enquire and before we head away from the session too! The timeframe is longer than my event editing timeframes, as family sessions are less time-sensitive and don’t date as fast as events. This also allows me to offer them at a more affordable price!
Can I bring my pet?
Absolutely! I love animals, and as long as you think they will behave reasonably and won’t escape, any animals are more than welcome! Give me a heads up before you bring them, if you can!
